Paul de Flers, "Penha de França"

"Penha de França" exhibition concludes a four-month residency in Portugal, where the artist Paul de Flers (Almine Rech) produced all the paintings on display.
The colours of the canvases are inspired by the tinted windows of his studio on the Rua da Penha de França - colours which are themselves omnipresent on the façades of Lisbon - and which become his exclusive palette.
Men, animals and sculptures are sometimes scattered and lost in imaginary landscapes. Sometimes, they are the nerve centre of the exhibition, while small canvases and paintings mounted on wood are combined with the large formats to clarify their meaning or to underline a detail in a display conceived specifically for the BOA gallery. The centre piece of the exhibition was acquired by the Pinault Foundation.
